Dear Sir/Madam,

May I firstly introduce myself , I’m Andrew Murray a former European Open Champion and player on the European Tour for over 20yrs and am an Honorary Member of the British PGA.

I first met Matty some 7 years ago whilst I was head of the junior coaching programme at Lymm GC in Cheshire UK, I’d say he was around 10yrs old and was, even back then a confident young lad, cheeky with it and had an obvious talent for the game. He played most of his golf back then at Nefyn GC in North Wales where his folks tended to spend much of the summer. The course there is very exposed to the weather as its alongside the coast. I remember his ability, perhaps as early as a 13yr old boy at being able to flight the ball low as required, something most kids tend not to know too much about in Lymm! Anyhow, for the last 4years or so we have spent more time together on the practice ground and the course, he has developed into a really fine player indeed. That apart though, he’s an exceptionally nice, kind and considerate young man. He took over as Junior Captain at Lymm a couple of years back, led by example and was an absolute credit to his parents and our club. His encouragement of the younger, less talented boys and girls was quite special indeed.

He has since moved up to college at Myerscough and I still see him most weekends, his game has developed, and his nature not changed. He will be a fabulous addition to any college set up anywhere in the World, a proper teammate and an all-round good fellow.

I wish him every success wherever he goes and look forward to following his progress.

I have known Matty Griffiths for over 3 years as part of the boy’s squads here at Cheshire Golf. He is an ’08 birthday and came into our Under 14s squad back in 2021, since then he has leapt forward, and this summer played several times for the County Under 18s team. 

He is such a keen young man and is always listening to the coaches and seems to soak up information and use it well. He has had some very good results in the games he has played for the County this summer and next year with his handicap now approaching scratch (0.6 currently) he should be in the top 10 players in the Boys squad and will be picked for a lot of events. Given his age he can still play for the County for another year and I hope he has a successful season as the current squad in Cheshire is very strong.

Matty actually relishes the challenge of being part of a strong squad and is keen to compete for a place in the team for every match, and no doubt he will get more and more opportunities as he grows. He also uses the quality of some of the others in the squad who are already playing for England Boys to act as a motivation to do even better himself.

When I first met Matty he was quite small, but he has grown in physique as well as height over the last three years and is now both fit and strong and uses this well to help his golf.

Given his even temperament I am sure he will cope very well with studying abroad and with the support he gets from his family I am sure he will have no problems in settling in well when he goes to University. Like many of his age group, they dream of going to one of the top American Universities and I would encourage you to look closely at Matty when making your offers as I think he will do you proud if you select him.

As Junior Organiser for Lymm Golf Club I have had the pleasure of knowing Matthew (Matty) since I took on my role in 2001. At the time our junior section was struggling and one of the first things we did was to appoint Matty as our first Junior Vice Captain, this was done mid-term with a view to having a focal point that the other juniors could follow. That was a hugely successful appointment as Matty led from the front both in terms of his dedication to improving his own game and (from my perspective most importantly) the way he inspired the other juniors. The following year he became Junior Captain and he took a very active role in shaping what we do for junior golfers, from the grass roots development level through to playing for the County.

I’m sure that you’re aware of some of Matty’s many golfing achievements already, whether that be his playing for the U18s team for Cheshire County or winning the countless open competitions, however you won’t be aware of the ‘Beat Matty’ competition that we had on the putting green which saw him having to do 50 press-ups as one of our younger juniors took him on (we did give them a bit of an unfair advantage), he took it in great spirits and is just another example of what a great person he is to have around.

I have watched Matty develop and grow as both a person and a golfer. As he moves onto the next chapter of his development, I know he will be a great person to have as part of your setup. His enthusiasm is balanced by his calm attitude which is beyond his years and his golfing ability is phenomenal.
